In 2026, Susanna celebrates the 25th anniversary of her studio, and at Exágono Magazine we mark the occasion with this monograph dedicated to her, her practice, and some of her most iconic projects.

Some trajectories are built through projects; others through a gaze. Susanna Cots belongs to the latter. From her first studio in l’Empordà in 2001 to her international expansion — with a second office in Hong Kong in 2014 — her work has evolved as a continuous exploration of emotional wellbeing. As a tangible experience: light, silence, memory, and perception.

Few interior designers in Spain have developed a language as recognisable and coherent as Susanna’s. Her work has been acknowledged both nationally and internationally for its aesthetic and conceptual sensitivity. In 2026, Susanna celebrates the 25th anniversary of her studio, and at Exágono Magazine we celebrate it with this monograph dedicated to her, her practice, and some of her most iconic projects.

See all the projects included in the monograph

For several months, Susanna shared with us weekly texts she called Kando, a Japanese word that defines “the profound satisfaction and emotion felt when encountering something of exceptional value.” These texts condense her inner universe. An intimate series in which the designer steps away from professional discourse to explore what sustains her practice: lived life.

We have allowed ourselves to return to those texts and read them again. This is a journey through the ideas that nourish her way of understanding spaces — and our way of inhabiting them.

Everyday life

The deepest architecture is not built with matter but with gestures. Susanna Cots places the origin of her sensitivity in what remains unseen: the invisible rituals that sustain daily life. The crumpled blanket, coffee in silence, the pause before the day begins. Small choreographies that build identity. “This is where beauty hides, in what seems insignificant but accompanies you every morning, shaping and giving intention to the day ahead. That is the feeling I seek to experience every day: in my family, in my work, in my designs. Because it is authentic,” she tells us.

In her gaze, the home is above all an intimate refuge, and everyday life becomes a root. “Let us be grateful to be part of that imperfection that makes us more authentic, more ourselves, more profound. We are what we live in every instant.”

Light

If there is a common thread in Susanna Cots’ work, it is light as an emotional language. A living material that accompanies the rhythm of the body, that activates, calms, or gathers. Light as the choreography of the day. “Your body responds almost automatically, as if the sun held the key that activates your entire system,” she writes.

From the clarity of dawn to the domestic dimness of night, the designer describes a dance of illuminations that shape moods. Cold light that drives action. Warm light that gathers. Indirect light that suspends time. “I have learned to domesticate light, to shape it so it can dialogue with space and emotions.” In her creative universe, light accompanies us continuously, though in ever-changing forms.

Essence

Speaking of essence without falling into rhetoric is one of Susanna’s enduring obsessions. In contrast to the contemporary trivialisation of the word, she returns it to its original territory: the unrepeatable, the non-replicable, what cannot become a trend. “Essence will never be a trend,” she says.

“The essence of a space is its deep breath. It is the silent echo of those who inhabit it. The harmony between outside and inside, between what has been lived and what is yet to come. It is not only what we see, but what we feel when we are there: a heartbeat that welcomes and accompanies, that holds our memories and allows us to simply be, in the stillness of the everyday.”

Susanna speaks of essence as a great inner search. “When I think about essence, I imagine a space that speaks of you without saying your name.” In her approach, essence is built over time: memories, rituals, belonging, safety, connection with the natural and the vital. A slow architecture that seeks permanence rather than impact.

Les Clarisses Hotel Boutique Project. Susanna Cots turns silence into a sensory experience in the Les Clarisses boutique hotel. See full article.

The architecture of scent

There are invisible dimensions that define spaces. Smell is one of them. Susanna approaches it as an architectural discipline: layers, depth, memory. Like a perfume unfolding in notes. “A scent is like a book, like a space, like a soul.”

Top notes as threshold. Heart notes as embrace. Base notes as persistent memory. Scent understood as an emotional structure that builds identity. “I have always believed that smell is one of the pillars of spatial design — invisible yet decisive, capable of transforming a room into a refuge or into a memory.” Designing spaces is also designing memories.

Perception

Perception appears as an intimate compass. Rather than measuring, it orients. For Susanna, spaces are not understood — they are felt. And that perception changes over time, because we change. “Homes are not monuments; they are living beings that grow, adapt, and evolve with us.”

Perception as pause, as interruption of noise, as an instant of awareness. “Stopping to enjoy, to understand, and to understand yourself.” Space thus becomes a temporal mirror: it reflects who we were, who we are, and who we are becoming.

Change

If perception opens the gaze, change displaces it. In Susanna Cots’ thinking, change is continuity. A natural flow comparable to the cycles of nature. “Like a landscape that evolves with the seasons, the home should reflect our vital flow.”

Homes as open diaries, where every transformation adds layers of meaning. Nothing definitive, everything alive. “Homes are not made to be forever.” Accepting impermanence as a form of freedom.

The invisible

At the end of the journey appears the concept closest to her professional practice: the invisible. That which is not shown but sustains the experience — light, silence, noble materials, atmospheres. Elements that do not need explanation; they are perceived. “Making the complex simple, making it unnoticeable,” Susanna says.

Design as a silent act, as structured intuition, as emotional geometry. “A design that works with invisible elements in favour of your wellbeing.” Here the essence of her interior architecture is revealed: an aesthetic that seeks connection beyond protagonism.

Evolution

The cycle closes with an inevitable word: evolution, as acquired awareness. A journey from sensitivity towards clarity. “Evolution is the journey from hypersensitivity to consciousness.”

Light reappears as both origin and destination — a language that structures her trajectory and runs through her projects. “Because light does not only illuminate: it transforms.” Evolution understood as refinement rather than accumulation.

Susanna Cots’ work is built from the inside out

Susanna Cots proposes an attitude: listening before designing, feeling before building, removing before adding. Her work — and projects such as The Eleven House — emerges from that conviction: that space can be refuge, awareness, and memory at once. At a time when architecture tends toward noise, her trajectory insists on the opposite: lowering the volume to hear the essential again. Her work proposes a way of being in the world — and also a way of inhabiting it.

Susanna Cots

Few interior designers in Spain have developed such a distinctive and coherent language as Susanna Cots. Her work—shaped by a deep connection to nature and emotional wellbeing—unfolds from her studio in the serene landscape of the Empordà region, infusing each project with a sense of clarity, balance and quiet beauty. Her approach has garnered recognition both nationally and internationally for its aesthetic sensitivity and conceptual depth.

Cots’ trajectory is defined by a pursuit of equilibrium. A balance between light and shadow, fullness and emptiness, geometry and emotion. Her spaces are invitations to stillness and introspection, where daily life becomes a meditative experience. Natural light, noble materials and organic forms weave a narrative centered on wellbeing, honesty and essential beauty.

Her vision goes beyond decoration: it is a way of inhabiting. Each project is an invitation to reconnect with what matters, to strip away the unnecessary, and to embrace the harmony of simplicity. From private homes to boutique hotels and commercial spaces, Susanna Cots has cultivated a timeless aesthetic—one that speaks directly to the soul.

Behind the calm that defines her interiors lies rigorous work, a deep attention to detail, and a finely tuned intuition that reads each space with empathy. Because for Susanna Cots, to design is, above all, an act of care.

A place of quiet intensity, where architecture, memory and everyday life intertwine naturally. A house that remains open as a shared space, a territory of encounters and a vital synthesis of a trajectory.

Located at number 11 on carrer Major in Peratallada, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval villages in l’Empordà (Girona), The Eleven House is probably Susanna Cots’ most personal project. More than an exercise in interior design, it is a house conceived as a space for shared living: shop, meeting place, creative laboratory and gallery. A project where architecture and biography intertwine.

Designed under a slow philosophy — the same that accompanies the designer’s personal and professional life — the house was conceived to create a place where time expands and the boundaries between disciplines dissolve. It is not a permanently inhabited dwelling, but it is deeply lived. A house that, as Susanna Cots and Alex Juvé explain, discovered them: “houses find you, and we were waiting for it.” A space that gathers the essence of their studio, where they share their perception of beauty, nature and emotion.

A discovery that reshaped the project

The intervention began with an 18th-century house in a state of ruin. During construction, an unexpected discovery reformulated the meaning of the project: after removing successive construction layers, a fragment of Peratallada’s medieval wall — built between the 12th and 13th centuries — emerged, crossing the interior of the house. The finding was integrated as a presence that reorganises the spatial narrative. The wall, now visible in the boutique area, becomes the historical and symbolic anchor of the house. From that moment on, the project took a more ambitious direction: to preserve, share and activate a place that already contained centuries of memory.

A house conceived to be shared

The Eleven House unfolds across three floors and 140 m², complemented by an outdoor area of 100 m². The layout responds less to conventional domestic logic than to a sequence of uses linked to encounter. The entrance space, opening directly onto carrer Major, has been transformed into a small design boutique. Here, objects for the home, personal care pieces, books and artworks coexist alongside collections designed by Susanna Cots herself. The space rests on the stone walls recovered during the restoration, where original materiality acts as a silent backdrop.

On the first floor, the house adopts a more domestic approach. A fully equipped kitchen allows for gatherings, meals or presentations. The Solitaire piece by bulthaup takes centre stage and also serves as a display for the Onze ceramic collection, designed by the interior designer and produced in the Empordà. Next to the kitchen, a dining area with a table for eleven guests and a living room with a fireplace form a continuous space conceived for conversation and pause.

Between everyday life and shared experience

The house is conceived as a place full of life: workshops, gatherings, creative sessions and private celebrations form part of its usual programme. The architecture offers a flexible framework where different ways of inhabiting can unfold.

The upper floor hosts the most versatile space in the house. Here, practices linked to wellbeing take place, such as meditation or yoga sessions, accompanied by small domestic rituals — breakfasts, shared pauses — that reinforce the intimate dimension of the place. But it is also where the house opens to its most public side: the art gallery.

A gallery as a natural extension of the house

The Eleven Gallery emerges as a natural extension of the project, where art and everyday life coexist effortlessly. The exhibitions, constantly evolving, activate the upper floor as a place for observation and encounter, maintaining the intimate scale that defines the entire house. Artists exhibited include Jimmy Millán, Pati Baztán, Cristina Blanch, Cécile Bercovici, Anna Carmona, Sara N. Bergman, Beatriz Montero, Mireia Abras, Tània Font and Conrad Roset, among others.

This hybrid condition — between home, creative refuge and cultural space — defines the project’s singularity. The house remains open and available to different readings and uses.

The exterior as a space of continuity

At the rear, a garden of approximately 100 m² extends the experience outdoors. Here, the furniture is by Calma, designed by Inma Bermúdez with the complicity of Andreu Carulla. A small shed next to the secondary entrance structures this area, which serves as a setting for workshops, intimate concerts, wine tastings or breakfasts after yoga sessions. Rather than an ornamental garden, it is a space of continuity: a natural extension of the house where time is perceived differently and where collective activity acquires a more sensory dimension.

A house as a quiet manifesto

The Eleven House is, in essence, a built manifesto, grounded in the coherence between intention and form. The recovery of a historical structure, attention to human scale and the will to share shape a project that moves between the domestic and the cultural. In this sense, the house condenses many of the constants in Susanna Cots’ work: the search for calm, the construction of contained atmospheres and an understanding of interior design as a discipline capable of structuring experiences. Here, however, that gaze becomes more direct, more autobiographical.

The Eleven House is a place of quiet intensity, where architecture, memory and everyday life intertwine naturally. A house not permanently inhabited, yet always open as a shared space — a territory of encounters and a vital synthesis of a trajectory.

View full biography.

Beyond its material dimension, the metal becomes a narrative device that unfolds the spatial experience and defines the identity of the whole.

In the Copper House project, Susanna Cots explores the relationship between matter and perception through a home where copper—its earthy tone and reassuring texture—acts as the guiding thread of the project. Beyond its material dimension, the metal becomes a narrative device that unfolds the spatial experience and defines the identity of the whole.

The project begins with the intention of creating a house where interior design does not merely accompany the architecture but actively participates in shaping the space. From the outset, the intervention is conceived as an integral operation, where layout, materiality, and atmosphere are understood as inseparable.

The home is organised around a structure in which the shared areas unfold as a continuous space. Susanna avoids traditional hierarchies between rooms and proposes a more horizontal domestic reading, where everyday life flows without interruption. The kitchen, dining area, and living room are integrated into a single sequence that adapts to different moments of the day.

It is within this interior landscape that copper takes centre stage. It appears in vertical planes, custom-designed furniture elements by the interior designer, and construction details, generating warm glimmers that contrast with the neutral base of the project. Far from a decorative application, its presence introduces depth and sensory variation, activating the perception of space.

The rest of the material palette follows a logic of balance. The colour white, a hallmark of the designer, natural woods, and matte finishes create a serene backdrop that allows copper to emerge naturally. Light, carefully modulated, amplifies this condition, transforming the metal throughout the day and reinforcing the temporal dimension of the interior.

In the private areas, the project becomes more introspective. The bedrooms are conceived as spaces of pause, where formal continuity is maintained but material intensity is reduced. Here, the architecture draws closer to the body, privileging silence and intimacy.

The result is a home grounded in coherence. Copper House is built upon a patient construction of atmospheres. Susanna Cots proposes a form of domesticity in which material not only defines space but accompanies it over time, generating an experience that evolves with light and use.

The project can be understood as an exploration of interiority. More than an exercise in style, it proposes a way of living in which design acts as a mediator between landscape and everyday life.

In Autumn in the North, Susanna Cots transfers her characteristic language — rooted in calm, light, and spatial continuity — into a different geographical and emotional context. In this project, the intervention seeks to create an inner refuge for a couple of architects with children, capable of engaging in dialogue with the intensity of the surrounding landscape.

Susanna asks: “Why build walls and close spaces when what you seek is connection?” Her response here is a fluid sequence of rooms where boundaries dissolve. Gentle transitions replace rigid compartmentalisation, encouraging a continuous reading of the domestic space. The shared areas are conceived as a single interior landscape in which kitchen, dining, and living spaces share the same atmosphere, shaped by the constant presence of natural light.

“The kitchen emerges as a space that distributes the rest of the rooms in symmetrical degrees, like a fan that gathers and disperses intimacy and communication,” explains the interior designer, who creates modules open on both sides of the kitchen. An original solution that allows for dual circulation, both inside and around the space.

Material becomes the primary tool in shaping the spatial narrative. Light woods, warm textiles, and mineral surfaces compose a palette that evokes the organic without slipping into the rustic. The chromatic neutrality responds to the need to amplify light and generate a sustained sense of calm.

The relationship with the exterior is conceived through contemplation rather than radical openness. Large openings frame the landscape, allowing nature to enter the interior without disrupting the feeling of shelter. In addition, each space incorporates a tree as a living connection to nature: an olive tree and a Japanese willow are among those that accompany the family.

In the more private realm, the bedrooms adopt the same narrative. Transitions between rest, bathroom, and dressing areas are resolved through continuous solutions, where architecture is perceived more as atmosphere than structure. The space is organised to accompany the body, avoiding unnecessary formal gestures. One of the few rooms with a door is the children’s bedroom — a space designed to evolve with their age and their growing need for privacy.

This project can be understood as an exploration of interiority. More than a stylistic exercise, Autumn in the North proposes a way of inhabiting in which design acts as a mediator between landscape and everyday life. Susanna Cots constructs an interior that dialogues with its surroundings, welcoming them with serenity and transforming the home into a space of pause and permanence.

In the heart of Vic, the former convent of Les Clarisses has been transformed into a contemporary sanctuary of wellbeing, thanks to the thoughtful intervention of Catalan interior designer Susanna Cots.

With her studio nestled in the tranquil landscape of the Empordà, and a career defined by an emotional approach to design, Susanna Cots completes the first phase of this boutique hotel with a project that encompasses the lobby, lounge and gastronomic restaurant—three spaces conceived for embracing silence and being enveloped by nature.

Wood, stone and natural light form the pillars of a design where each element is born from the spirit of the place. Cots has developed the interior from the essence of the site itself: the convent’s heritage, its ancient textures, the rhythm of the surrounding landscape. As a result, the organic becomes both language and guiding thread throughout the project.

Curved, fluid forms foster an atmosphere of calm. The walls, which seem to breathe, suggest both movement and stillness. A palette of sandy tones—used in flooring, wall finishes and bespoke furniture—translates the earth’s natural colour into a coherent, enveloping chromatic experience.

Light as architectural gesture

At Les Clarisses, light does more than reveal the space: it transforms it. Daylight pouring in through the hotel’s tall windows informs the lighting scheme, which is further enhanced by indirect architectural lighting designed to encourage rest and introspection. In the restaurant, asymmetrically placed ceramic lamps recall the irregular beauty of nature, while the sand-wave murals—near the fireplace and along the main wall—add a poetic gesture that enriches the architecture.

A dialogue with history

The project integrates original elements from the old convent—such as fountains, stone pillars and vaulted ceilings—with new architectural lines that alternate between geometric clarity and gentle curves. The use of noble materials like natural linen, mortex surfaces, and carved stone enhances the timeless character of the whole.

Beyond design, Susanna Cots offers an experience: one of inhabiting silence, sensing the material world, and letting light reconnect us to the present moment. This first chapter at Les Clarisses is just the beginning of a larger project, in which the designer will continue to explore her emotional, conscious and deeply human design language.

Susanna Cots: Susanna Cots: spaces open to silence and introspection

From private homes to boutique hotels and commercial spaces, Susanna Cots cultivates a timeless aesthetic—one that speaks directly to the soul.

Behind the calm that defines her interiors lies rigorous work, a deep attention to detail, and a finely tuned intuition that reads each space with empathy. Because for Susanna Cots, to design is, above all, an act of care.

In a setting like Ibiza, this 350 m2 house, originally dark, was crying out for an intervention that would open up large windows to flood it with light and connect it with the beautiful 3,000 m2 of gardens and the island’s vibrant nature. This is what interior designer Susanna Cots has done: fill this Mediterranean house with white, green and sandy colours, opening it up to the spectacle of the marvellous light that this island offers.

Indoor outdoor integration

The living area, which shares space with the dining room and kitchen, opens up to the outside, integrating the porch and the garden through glass enclosures and creating a continuous space with a shared central element, a fireplace designed in a symmetrical way open to the living room and the porch. This produces the maximum interior-exterior integration that is one of the characteristics present in Susanna Cots’ projects.

"Returning to the purity of nature has involved a process of acceptance and respect. Understanding that there is no right angle in this house helps us to appreciate and value the beauty of imperfection and to exalt it", Susanna Cots tells us.

Susanna Cots has restored for this Empordà family the authenticity of a home whose stone speaks to us of the emotions that have always existed: well-being, family, refuge, intimacy.

“Returning to the purity of nature has been a process of acceptance and respect. Understanding that there is no right angle in this house, serves to appreciate and value the beauty of imperfection and enhance it”, explains the interior designer.

Natural style as the soul of the project

The search for functional solutions in line with the design concept developed has led the interior designer to choose continuous lime mortar flooring, which facilitates the breathability of the floors and prevents damp.

The beamed ceiling and the Catalan vault have also been recovered and lacquered in white, a colour that is one of the hallmarks of the project and which brings light into all the spaces.

The natural style, as the soul of the project, is the main feature of the stone walls and all the furniture custom-designed by Susanna Cots in solid chestnut wood.

The design of symmetrical spaces

One of the design concepts developed by Susanna Cots is the connection of interior and exterior spaces. We see this reflected in the kitchen, a vital space for family communication and the garden porch.

Fireplaces, placed in different areas of the home, are elements that appear regularly in the studio’s projects. In this case, the fireplace in the master suite, located on the top floor, is the soul of the house.

Spaces for reading and well-being

The two living rooms, on the lower and upper floors, identify spaces for reading, study and relaxation. While the one on the ground floor is designed as a corner near the fire, the upper floor incorporates a bookcase and work tables.

The night area consists of three en-suite suites with their own style for the older and younger members of the family.

The staircase, a connecting element between the lower and upper floors, is designed as a storage space at the same time.
