With refined sensitivity, De la Villa Studio delivers a masterful intervention in a home located in Glorieta de Bilbao, one of the urban epicentres of historic Madrid. This 1920 building, with three additional levels added in 1945, retains the architectural style of the period—so characteristic of the Chamberí district—evident in the morphology of its walls and the patina of its materials.

As in other similar projects, the challenge was twofold: to preserve the dignity of the past while shaping a present that is livable, warm, and contemporary. The response to this tension comes with the elegance we have come to expect from the designers at De la Villa, allowing materials to speak for themselves. The original Mellis pine floors, with their rare diamond pattern, were restored like an ancient tapestry. Mouldings, high ceilings, and restored solid wood carpentry become the narrative thread where classical architecture merges with clean lines and modern solutions.

The original layout, defined by a long hallway and compartmentalised spaces, was entirely reimagined. The new layout unfolds as a fluid sequence of interconnected rooms, where each space seems to anticipate the next. The entrance leads to a generous living room with a fireplace, a kitchen conceived as the heart of the home, an intimate and elegant library, and two distinct sleeping areas that ensure privacy without disconnection. The primary suite, with its sculptural dressing area and a stone-framed shower reminiscent of a domestic altar, is one of the project’s most remarkable spaces.

The interior design, coherent and subtle, relies on a palette dominated by warm whites, natural stones, and woods crafted with artisanal precision. In the kitchen, the studio plays with the geometry of stone materials, combining travertines and limestones in a custom pattern that emphasises volume. The Taj Mahal stone island takes centre stage, surrounded by fully concealable cabinetry and a small, original, and welcoming breakfast nook.

Another distinctive signature appears in the custom-designed furniture by the studio’s designers: coffee tables, the dining table, the main bedroom’s headboard, bedside tables, and two oak and Travertino Olivillo stone washbasins that elevate everyday gestures into ceremony. The result is an atmosphere of sophisticated calm, where classical and contemporary elements engage in a natural conversation. Artworks and carefully selected objects, many sourced from antique dealers or local galleries, complete a serene domestic universe, full of character and nuance.

The studio stands out for its deep interest in the natural essence of materials and a profound appreciation for how they age over time. This philosophy has led to a constant exploration of innovative and creative ways to use those materials. Read full studio biography.

The result is a spacious home with interconnected rooms, generous corridors and elegant antechambers, all bathed in natural light that brings the city into the interior landscape.

This home, renovated by De la Villa Studio, is located on Príncipe de Vergara street in Madrid’s Salamanca district, with that classic style typical of the centre of Madrid. The interior designers have achieved spaces that breathe modernity and serenity in contrast to the hustle and bustle outside.

“The challenge of this project began with an original layout that did not take advantage of the potential of the house. The rooms were small, the corridors were endless and natural light was scarce, which created an environment that was not very functional. So, we set out to renovate the house in a way that not only reorganised the spaces, but also connected them in a fluid way, creating an open and luminous home that reflected the tranquillity that we wanted to transmit“, say the interior designers.

The result of the intervention is a house with large spaces, connected to each other through generous distributors and elegant anterooms, with the light from its large windows flooding every corner, allowing the city to form part of the interior landscape.

The tour through the house is a real enjoyment of noble materials and simply elegant furniture, with modern design pieces that add character, such as the coffee table in the living room designed by the interior designers with a travertine stone base, the black leather armchairs by Rue Vintage 74, or the modern art pieces by Galería Alzueta. All this has transformed this home into a modern and sophisticated oasis full of peace.

De la Villa Studio

De la Villa Studio is a young studio born from the shared passion for architecture and interior design of its founding partners: Alberto Espejo, interior designer, Miguel Otero, architect and Juan Esteve, architect, who previously developed projects independently.

The studio is distinguished by a deep interest in the naturalness of materials and an appreciation of their ageing over time. This approach has led to a constant exploration in the search for innovative and creative ways of using these materials.

Most of the projects they are currently working on focus on residential housing, with a special emphasis on the remodelling of historic buildings in the centre of Madrid. The intention is to capture the unique essence of each space, transforming it into something special and functional. One of the biggest challenges they face is to make each place attractive for everyday life, awakening the interest and emotional connection of those who live there.

The studio is characterised by its dynamism and continuous growth. The team has expanded with the incorporation of specialists in various fields of architecture and interior design, thus forming a multidisciplinary team where each member brings unique knowledge and enriches each other.

They strive to design spaces that are not only visually stunning, but that also excite and connect with the people who will ultimately inhabit them.

The art of poets—of objects or of words—lies in naming and shaping without losing meaning. Here, metaphors take form in space, materials and language, opening new paths to expression and experimentation.

The talent shown by the young architects and interior designers of the De la Villa studio is to blame for our addiction to their projects. In this one, the protagonist is a lover of literature and Art Deco, as they tell us, which makes us think of his familiarity with the emotions provoked by the words of poets. García Lorca said that “poetry is the union of two words that one never supposed could come together, and which form something like a mystery”, and that mystery is, without doubt, the origin of the emotion that poetry produces in us.

Just like words, objects need to come together, which leads to a poetics of shapes, materials and colours, in the search for meaning and emotions, something like a mystery that spaces provoke in the people who inhabit them. This is the obsession of all interior designers, but only those endowed with the talent and the craft of bringing together objects chosen or designed with great knowledge and sensitivity can act as masters of the poetics we are talking about. The interior designers of the De la Villa studio belong to this lineage that we admire.

As soon as we enter this flat, which enjoys the authenticity of Madrid’s late 19th and early 20th century architecture, with high ceilings, recovered mouldings and balconies to the outside, we come across a space that oozes exquisiteness, with a natural stone floor overflowing with geometries, with the natural oak wood of the furniture that presides over the space, designed by the interior designers, together with the painting by Aythamy Armas and some fluted wooden columns that transport us to classic spaces from another time.

The interior designers have talked about how Art Deco has been a source of inspiration in the project and in particular in the design of the different compositions of the stone and wood floors of the house, or in the sliding doors that lead to the master bedroom.

In the living room, flooded with light from two large wooden windows of yesteryear, the symphony of objects, presided over by a discreet and minimalist fireplace and the floor of the same natural stone, sheltered by the beautiful carpet of the Swedish company Layered, offers us the relaxation of the armchairs and sofa for rest and gatherings, with the counterpoint of marble and glass in an unexpected combination and the art, on all four sides, of López-Quincoces, Violeta Maya and María Yelletisch, luxury inhabitants of the Alzueta Gallery.

We return through the entrance hall to the interior area of the house (see floor plan) which has two beautiful interior courtyards that bring light into these spaces: kitchen, dining room, office, two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and dressing room.

Undoubtedly the star of the house is the library office, also a dining room, meeting room and reading corner. This large library in natural oak wood, with its shelves multiplied on the aged mirrored ceiling to bring light and amplitude, is much more than a collection of books, it is a treasure for its owner, a space that houses the presence of read authors, who look at him out of the corner of their eyes and, in moments of solitude, accompany him in his reading corner, with their words, stories, memories and emotions. The space is completed with an original smoked glass table, designed by the interior designers, and a set of natural oak chairs, accompanied by the art of Sabine Finkenauer and Bruno Ollé, also illustrious tenants of the Alzueta Gallery.

Achieving this warm space in the heart of the home is one of the great achievements of this project, of which the interior designers can be proud.

This approach has led them to constantly explore innovative and creative ways of using these materials.

De la Villa is characterised by its dynamism and continuous growth. The team has expanded with the incorporation of specialists in various fields of architecture and interior design, thus forming a multidisciplinary team where each member brings unique knowledge and enriches each other.

The interior designers chose clean-lined pieces that add elegance and functionality to every room, without overwhelming the space. A neutral, soft colour palette creates a serene and welcoming atmosphere.

The interior designers of De la Villa Studio designed this home, with a surface area of almost 100m2, for a young Argentinian businesswoman who is dedicated to luxury tourism and who was looking for a quiet space in which to disconnect from her professional activity.

The property, located on Travesía de Belén street in Madrid, enjoys the serenity of a street with little traffic in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the Justicia neighbourhood and is located on the corner of the building facing another street, which provides an exceptional feeling of spaciousness and luminosity in the dining room area.

The original layout was more compartmentalised, and due to the angular layout of the building, many partition walls were placed at oblique angles. These were restructured to achieve a more regular and functional layout.

The renovation focused on making the most of natural light, so it was decided to give continuity to all the balconies. The living/dining room has 4 balconies, while the guest bedroom, master bedroom and dressing room have their own balcony. The kitchen has been integrated into the living room by means of an opening that maintains a certain degree of independence.

The entire house pivots around the living room, which serves as the central core, eliminating the need for corridors and facilitating circulation between the different rooms. The original compartmentalisation was not the only challenge they faced: in buildings of that era, the installations usually run through the interior courtyards. “We didn’t have any downpipes in the entire façade area that would allow us to bring the wet areas there, so we had to orientate the kitchen and bathrooms towards the inner courtyard“, say the interior designers.

The house features generous ceiling heights and a spacious living room that serves as the central core, eliminating the need for corridors and facilitating circulation between the different rooms.

On entering, one perceives a harmony in the materials that define the essence of the project throughout the house: natural oak wood lacquered in white, white walls and earth-toned stone. The floor, in natural oak, unifies the spaces, while the made-to-measure woodwork, such as doors and skirting boards, is in white lacquered wood. Olivillo travertine stone is used in the bathroom and Emperador claro in the kitchen.

The interior design is characterised by a careful selection of furniture and decoration that complements the harmony of the materials and the luminosity of the space. The interior designers chose pieces with clean lines that bring elegance and functionality to each room, without visually overloading the spaces. The colour palette is kept in neutral and soft tones, creating a serene and welcoming atmosphere.

Some of the pieces are designed to the average for this project by De la Villa Studio, something recurrent in their projects given that they tend to be homes of contained dimensions that require an optimisation of space. Clean-lined pieces have been chosen to bring elegance and functionality to each room, without visually overloading the spaces.
