The Gurdau Winery was founded in 2012 in a green field, with the first vines planted on the slopes above the village of Kurd\u011bjov. This village was historically one of the most important suppliers of wine to the inhabitants of Mikulov and Brno, as well as to the aristocratic courts of Moravia. By adopting the historical name of the village, the young Gurdau Winery claims the great wine heritage of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n

Organic architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The building is made of reinforced concrete and has two floors, the underground part is used for wine production, storage and archiving, while the ground floor is used for wine tasting, catering and sales. Two flats are available for occasional overnight stays.The building’s underground environment is traditional for the winery, and its concept is totally contemporary and timeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The atmosphere of the environment is based on an experience of beauty, refinement and absolute comfort. The use of materials such as exposed concrete, glass, metal, oak and acacia wood is clean and direct and supports the organic form of the building. At the same time, the utmost attention is paid to precision craftsmanship and detail.Direct contact with the landscape, facilitated by large expanses of glass, expansive terraces and a gabled roof, brings a variety of natural environments and seasons to the experience of the space.The building’s embeddedness in the terrain creates a sense of a welcoming backdrop and a natural fusion with the place from which the wine originates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The views and ventilation can be enjoyed from the terraces and the artificial hill on the green roof, from where the fabulous landscape of the Kurd\u011bkhov skyline, the P\u00e1lava looming in the distance and the plains stretching towards Austria can be seen. The spaces of the wine house are changing and suitable for social and romantic events, as well as for quiet contemplation over a glass of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gurdau Winery<\/strong> concept will contribute significantly to the rapid growth of wine culture and wine tourism in the Czech Republic, and will support the growth of a new and charming tradition of encounters and cultivated connections between man, wine and landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The building has been designed with maximum respect for the surrounding landscape. It is completely covered by an extensive curved green roof, so that it is almost invisible in distant views once the vegetation has grown. The building’s surroundings are complemented by a series of new mature shrubs and trees to create an optimal microclimate for the future as well. The location of the building right in the vineyard minimises the transport of raw materials and workers within the winery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The production areas are located below ground level, while the customer areas are open to the sun through a glazed fa\u00e7ade, thus harnessing passive energy. To prevent overheating in the hottest summer months, thermally insulating triple glazing has been designed in combination with oak louvres in front of the windows, a sufficient overhang of the curved roof and shading of the pergola in front of the fa\u00e7ade with tarpaulins. An air-water heat pump is used for heating. Rainwater is collected in a tank and used to irrigate the vineyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in 1962, he lives and works in Brno (Czech Republic). He and his collaborators have designed numerous residential, civil and industrial buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
