I love their projects and I admire the growth of their studio thanks to their constant, intelligent and brilliant work, which shows confidence in their own style, built up over the years, without obsessing over the aesthetic trends of the moment, working for Spanish and foreign companies, whose main objective is to provide solutions for people rather than to cultivate stardom in the design scene.

Clara and Álex are industrial designers by training, they developed their careers separately for years until they met at the exhibition of young designers Nude in Valencia in 2004. At the end of 2006 they presented their first collection as Yonoh. Since 2014 they collaborate as teachers with the Cardenal Herrera CEU University in Valencia and give conferences and workshops all over the world disseminating their work methodology.

Those interested in learning more about Clara and Alex, their style and design methodology, can do so with their Product Creation course at Domestika. A jewel for any student or design enthusiast.

Yonoh is one of the most important Spanish design studios at the moment. They have earned their reputation thanks to their intense work over the last 15 years, during which they have created very interesting products, some of which we analyse in this conversation, winning important international awards such as IF Design, Red Dot Design, German Design, Good Design or Wallpaper* Design.

How did youget started in the profession, how did the Yonoh studio come about, your name, why?

The beginnings are always complicated, fortunately, the network of small furniture companies in the Valencia area has always been important, and that helped us to be able to start creating our first projects with them. In any case, the growth of the studio has always been very calm, this seems bad, but from our point of view, this has allowed us to grow at our own pace, without losing our personality. And we believe that this is reflected in our work.

The name Yonoh is almost like an ambigram, we wanted to show our bicephaly, as Clara and Álex are two different personalities that converge in a common interest, design.

We coincided in our early days exhibiting at Nude (the exhibition for young designers organised by Feria Habitat Valencia), where we began to collaborate and, shortly afterwards, we decided that the best thing to do was to join forces under a single brand.

Which designers are your references and who have been your teachers in this profession?

We have many references, from the great classics of the Bauhaus, to current designers such as the Bouroullec brothers or Konstantin Grcic. As for teachers, we have certainly been learning from the designers we have been close to, but, above all, we have learned a lot by collaborating with companies, they have taught us a lot about the profession, from when we started working in wood until now, when we have the opportunity to think about moulds and much more complex pieces than before. We jumped straight into forming Yonoh, with no previous experience in other design studios to teach us their own methodologies, we found our own way little by little, making a lot of mistakes to finally understand how we work best.

What is your usual design process for a new project, and how do you usually work as a team?

Alex, for example, prefers to generate creativity in more private spaces and in a more traditional way (pencil and paper), at home, for example, and when there is a solid concept, develop it in the studio in a more digital way.

We tend to move forward on projects separately and, at a certain point, start to collaborate on the project to bring it to the highest possible standard. The important decisions are always made by whoever is in charge of the particular project, but the other always collaborates to focus and improve each project. We try to contrast our own ways of seeing design in each project, this makes each one of them better, moreover, Yonoh is formed only by us, this is because we still prefer to go deeper into the design process than managing the design.

You comment that the products to be designed can be sober, emotional or artistic, how would you define the products you design and why have you chosen this design approach?

We like sober products, this has a lot to do with the personality of each one of us. Obviously, we try that each project tries to give us a certain emotion, but what interests us most is to do our work from a functional point of view, that the user likes it, that they feel good with it, but at the same time, that they have their own point of view in terms of production, materials, etc. This is a fundamental part of our work.

I’m going to ask you to tell us about the design process of some of your projects: the briefing, the concept developed, the inspiration, the result?

Nenúfar in 2008 was your first product with great media repercussion and many awards. How was the design process of Nenúfar?

In this case, Nenúfar came about without a briefing for a furniture company that had just appeared in Valencia. First we imagined how we would like to create a piece that would generate shade, we came up with the idea of using the shape of the water lily, because this allowed us to have a circular piece with the necessary hollow to add the mast. The result on an aesthetic level was very attractive, on a functional level, although we were designers with little experience, we were able to solve it in a very interesting way, using ball-and-socket joints and nylon pieces. The project had a great repercussion although, unfortunately, the company disappeared soon after and this product was parked. However, as always, we learned a lot from the whole process.

Nenúfar. 2008

Arc for Inclass in 2012, also an award-winning design, is it one of the projects that most represents you? What was the design process like?

Arc, on the other hand, has had a great run in the market, it is still a piece that works very well and that we see in many places we visit. Here, Inclass asked us to design a chair, functional but with personality. It occurred to us that making a backrest that enveloped the back would be very interesting; at that time, there were no chairs with these characteristics. The company liked the original design very much and, together with them, we were able to polish all the details so that the product could be produced in a differentiating and, at the same time, advantageous way for the company. Over the years, this has resulted in a product that never goes out of fashion.

Arc para Inclass. 2012

The Cloud collection for Bolia in 2016 surprises us with the beauty of the shapes and the structure of the thin legs that makes the pieces float. What can you tell us about this design and Bolia?

Cloud emerged as a very simple piece, a concept that we developed relatively quickly, where we wanted to design a very geometric piece that would maintain ergonomics but always maintaining marked angles and proportions. We were also interested in suspending the upholstered part with very light feet, so we made a metal rod frame that accompanies the upholstery around the perimeter. Cloud was our first project for Bolia, and Bolia was a big step because of the size of the company and also because it was a Danish company. Today we can say that Cloud is one of our best-selling products!

Cloud for Bolia. 2016

I have to confess that I am in love with the Banga lamps you designed for LZF in 2017. Love at first sight. I suppose this is one of your most popular designs, is it? How did these lamps come about?

Banga arises from necessity, the case of LZF is particular, they work with a specific material, it’s a wood veneer material, flat, with width restrictions. And we wanted to design a large piece. Thanks to our in-depth knowledge of the company’s processes, and with the inspiration from our previous trips to Japan, we thought that, inspired by the shape of Japanese sunshades, we could use the rods as an excuse to hide the joints between the sheets. This is how we developed the design. It is indeed another of our recognisable products. It is our lamp in the Yonoh meeting area, and we are in love with it too.

Banga para LZF. 2017

I’m surprised that a design as modern as Canasta for Musola in 2018, equally award-winning as most of your products, would fit into a seemingly traditional company. How was the design process for Canasta and your relationship with Musola?

We like Musola a lot because it is a very neat company in terms of production, they are very technical and the product always goes through a very interesting standardisation process. We started to collaborate first with Mobliberica, with more specific style restrictions, but Musola, as a new company, didn’t have them. In addition, we were looking to do something in rod. It was a learning process, both for the company and for us, we had to acquire specific machinery for this type of assembly and welding and, the good thing is that there must not be more companies in Spain capable of creating a rod housing like them. So, as always, we took away a very enriching experience. And another product to be super happy about.

Canasta para Musola. 2018

Working for Ton, a company with such a long and brilliant history I guess it wasn’t easy, your proposal in 2019, the Ginger armchair, was daring and surprising. How was your relationship with Ton and how did they receive your proposal?

Surprisingly, although Ton is a very large company, the relationship was smooth and very pleasant. We had previously designed a bar table, without much success, but the next brief was much more successful. They needed a small armchair, something that used wood, obviously, with their traditional curving and upholstery. Ginger was a very organic product for what they were doing at the time, but it was a selected piece, and we developed it very efficiently. We were in the Czech Republic several times to see the evolution of the design and it was always impressive to see the capacity of this company, and with so much tradition. We loved Ton!

Ginger para Ton. 2019

The Bost collection that you designed in 2020 for Treku is a great success, its versatility and the variety of possible models will have made the Treku family happy. What was Treku’s request and how was the design process?

Bost was born more as a single product than as a modular family. At the beginning, we designed a shelf that combined wood and metal, something that seemed essential for them, and that you could put together several pieces, but not like now, with a gigantic family to cover any need. We realise that a product works first, because we like it, but second, when we have the need to use it in our homes, it shows that it is a piece that will work well and, in this case, we use Bost a lot.

Of course, Bost would not be what it is without the support of Treku, they have a lot of experience and accompanied us in the development process. As a young company, they do not have infinite resources for the development of each project, they asked us to design an armchair, because of the experience we have in this type of upholstered product. The challenge was to achieve such an organic upholstered piece without using foam injection. And in the end we succeeded. Dins, although it may not seem so at first glance, is made in a traditional way, with cut foam, which makes it more sustainable. Dins means inside in our mother tongue, and what we wanted to make the user feel with this collection was the comfort of a piece that embraces and embraces you. We then created two different bases, in metal and wood.

Dins para Teulat. 2021

Viga’s design for MDD in 2022 is another example of masterful versatility and functionality that also demonstrates that furniture, traditionally called office furniture, is undergoing a profound change. How do you see that change and how does your Viga proposal fit into that landscape?

With Viga we had the possibility of making a larger design, we thought that aluminium extrusion would be a great ally for a collection in this aspect, the idea was to create a very modular piece, with few pieces, which would allow us to offer a large number of lengths. In addition, we thought that joining extruded aluminium with wood would create this aesthetic between home and office that has been so desired lately. For some time now, the aim has been to create much more homely offices where you can work in a fluid way but the feeling is more welcoming. We really enjoy projects like Viga in the studio, it allows us to make more intelligent designs and to think not only in terms of form, but also in terms of a much more developed technical process.

Viga para MDD. 2022

The design of Marietta for Capdell in 2023 is perhaps your most fun proposal, along with most of your more sober proposals. How did this design come about and what was Capdell’s response?

Capdell needed a light and stackable chair, from the shape of the shell of the ladybirds we thought of designing a shell for the back, at first, the idea was to create a concave shape, from the plywood, joining two sides of a cut made in the centre of the piece, we were doing tests on paper, cardboard, even wood … the result was very attractive, but, in a chair of this type, the cost of production vs. the final result was not totally satisfactory, so we opted to make the shape in a more traditional way. Marietta has a lot of personality, and a great variety of alternatives to cover many needs.

Marietta para Capdell. 2023

One of the greatest satisfactions of teaching design, which I have experienced at the IED, is being able to share with students the passion for design. How do you experience this?

The truth is that it is an enriching experience. It is an honour to pass on knowledge to new generations. We like to see how they get involved and evolve.

Do you see any differences in these young people you have as students from what you were like when you were studying design?

Design is a much better known discipline now than when we were studying. I think students are clearer about what it is and how they can develop professionally. They also have a lot more tools, although that is not always a good thing. They have lost a lot of interest in sketching and want to go very fast.

Perhaps your students are a good source for your studio, do your students work or have worked with you?

We have had some of our students on internships with us, but only for a short period of time. As we told you before, we don’t want to grow or become managers of a design studio, we want to remain designers. It is part of our identity to design ourselves.

How do you see your future in this profession?

Design has become one of the most studied careers in recent years, fortunately, the future in this aspect is promising, a large pool of designers from which, for sure, great professionals will emerge. Now we are coming up against AI, and well, at first this may scare us, but we are sure that it will be incorporated, little by little (or rather quickly) into our work process, just as we introduced the computer, 3D printing…

The design industry faces enormous challenges in the face of environmental demands. Do you think companies are currently prepared to face these challenges? What changes can we expect to see in the coming years?

Not all, but most of the companies already consider this as a fundamental part of their development, we have already faced the challenge of making a greener product, thinking about disassembly, not using glue, changing materials, etc. …. etc, and we are happy to see that, on occasions, it is the companies that propose certain changes to improve in this aspect. So, we are 100% confident that, in the future, everything will have this fundamental part of design integrated into the process.

Yonoh Creative Studio
Burriana 14
46005 Valencia
+34 96 328 04 98
info@yonoh.es
www.yonoh.es

Yonoh is one of Spain’s leading design studios today, having earned its reputation through 15 years of creative, award-winning work.
