Nipa Doshi<\/b> and Jonathan Levien<\/b> met as design students at the Royal College of Art in London in 1995. Nipa, born in Mumbai and raised in Delhi, recalls growing up appreciating the ideals of modernist design and the importance of craftsmanship, while Jonathan, trained in fine cabinetmaking and industrial design, spent much of his childhood learning how things are made in his family’s factory in Scotland. <\/span><\/p>\n

Though in some ways opposing, this plurality of cultural influences and experiences proved to be a great strength. Today, their celebrated Doshi Levien studio is defined by a hybrid mentality that emphasises technology, craftsmanship and industrial techniques in furniture, textile and product design. <\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout their lives and careers, both have “created a universe” for themselves in London. Their studio for the past 14 years has been a former 19th century furniture workshop on Columbia Road in the East End, where their small team mock-ups, sketches and mixes colours in the studio, colour lab and gallery space. <\/span><\/p>\n

Because of Nipa and Jonathan’s diverse upbringing and preferences, it is not surprising that cross-cultural perspectives continually emerge in their work. <\/span><\/p>\n

My World<\/b>, one of their first British Council commissions, served as a manifesto in their formative years. “We wanted to bring different worlds together in our work, not as an aesthetic language, but rather as a philosophical approach and a way of considering globalisation as a positive process of exchange of cultures, values, materials and methods of production<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This cross-cultural approach has become a constant in the studio’s approach over the last two decades, guiding his work for Moroso, Cappellini, Hay, Kettal, Nanimarquina, B&B Italia, Arper, for prestigious international museums and cultural institutions (in particular Sevres – Cit\u00e9 de la C\u00e9ramique and The Grand Hornu), and for his Paris-based gallery: Galerie Kreo.<\/p>\n

Like the foundations of Nipa and Jonathan’s partnership, the plurality of Doshi Levien’s portfolio is significant. It is rich, not only because of the broad scope of the couple’s design strengths, from colour and fabrics to form and structure, but because there is a generous dose of each of them in every project. <\/span><\/p>\n
