Sebastián Pérez Gómez

The passion Sebastián feels for his craft has been growing since he was a child in his hometown, Fuentes de Andalucía (Seville). In its streets, he was able to enjoy the characteristic brick façades that adorn the local houses.

Sebastián began learning the trade under the guidance of his father, José Pérez Gamero, who was locally known as “el Sillero.” This training, based on daily hands-on work at construction sites, allowed him to acquire the necessary knowledge to carry out a wide variety of masonry work. Among these, he was particularly drawn to the art of carving clay bricks. He discovered his artistic potential and grew enthusiastic about a craft in which he has specialized over the years.

“In our work, everything is done by hand, and that’s the most beautiful part of the trade. For me, this isn’t work—it’s enjoyment. In this craft, we use bricks, chisels, and hammers. Even though we aim for perfection and the pieces have to be custom-made, since everything is done by hand, no two pieces are ever the same. That’s what makes it artisanal—each piece is unique,” Sebastián explains.

Thanks to his mastery of the technique of carving fired clay bricks, he has been able to carry out a large number of works, most of them in Fuentes de Andalucía, both in new constructions and restoration projects.

A key part of his professional development has been his collaboration with the architect from Écija, Fernando Martín Sanjuán, winner of the 2020 Rafael Manzano Prize for New Traditional Architecture. This partnership has allowed him to deepen his understanding of the valuable architectural heritage of the Écija region.

Among the projects Sebastián has undertaken, his numerous contributions to the façades of various homes in Fuentes de Andalucía stand out. He was responsible for designing and incorporating ornamental elements such as pilasters, cornices, pediments, pendants, and estipites—all crafted from carved fired clay bricks.

He has also completed major restoration projects on historic buildings, such as a grand mansion on Lora del Río Street in the town of Fuentes de Andalucía. There, he restored a baroque entrance and revived the original splendor of several of its courtyards as well as a striking tower that had been deteriorated by time and neglect.
