Jateen Lad

Jateen Lad is an award-winning architect based in Manchester and Pondicherry, India, with over 20 years’ experience in the UK and abroad. His work is guided by the belief that good architecture and ethical building practices can be a force for social change.

Following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, he turned to work on sustainable community development projects and is recognised for his recent Sharanam buildings for the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry, India. His current projects are located locally in Manchester and internationally in Ireland, Germany, USA and throughout India.

He brings a holistic approach that integrates bespoke architecture, masterplanning, environmental design, construction management and building delivery in a socially empowering way, often in challenging contexts where design skills are most needed.

It is experienced in working closely with private clients, not-for-profit organisations, NGOs, schools, communities and funding bodies, enabling projects to transcend expectations and generate long-term benefits.

All projects are marked by a commitment to environmental and social sustainability. Working from the ground up, his projects encourage appropriate community participation, local capacity building and improved livelihoods.

Jateen studied at Cambridge University, M.I.T., Harvard University and the Architectural Association. He is regularly invited by leading institutions and universities to speak on the social value of architecture and alternative forms of practice. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a consultant to UN-Habitat and a technical reviewer for the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
