María Abando

Born in San Sebastián and currently based in Mallorca, María has devoted much of her life to teaching art and design. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country, a diploma in Industrial Design from the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, and a degree in Interior Design from the Escuela Superior de Diseño de Logroño.

For over two decades, she has been committed to design education, particularly in the generation of form, Design for All, and Ergonomics, teaching at the former Escuela Experimental de Diseño (now Arte10) in Madrid and at the Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny Illes Balears.

Her research has always been deeply linked to craft-based practices, particularly those involving textiles and their processes.

With her background in industrial design, she seeks in objects more than just symbolic function. Her works are always useful, original, and innovative projects, shaped by a personal design language and ongoing research, blending tradition with innovation.

Currently, María works with wool from Mallorcan sheep, which, especially after the COVID-19 crisis, has become an environmental and economic challenge. Classified as animal waste (SANDACH 3) under EU Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009, this wool has little commercial value due to the coarse quality of its fiber. María actively participates in the shearing process, then washes and cards the fleece by hand. She transforms this material into sculptural volumes and warm environments, giving new life to a neglected natural resource and reaffirming the value of craft, sustainability, and local identity in contemporary design.
