Casa Neutra: architecture as a reconnection with the earth

With Noro Estudio at the helm, this home rediscovers the building tradition of Castilla through a contemporary and serene lens.

In the heart of Castile, where the rural landscape still whispers tales of abandonment and resilience, Casa Neutra emerges as a love letter to the land and its traditions. The young architects of Noro Estudio, Ariadna Gutiérrez and Sergio Alonso, sign a contemporary work of architecture that listens to its surroundings, reinterprets the traditional courtyard house, and champions native materials in an exercise of profound sensitivity and respect.

This project is not simply a dwelling, but a deep reflection on territory, tradition, and the way we inhabit a landscape that, for decades, has suffered from depopulation and neglect. In a region where adobe and timber houses once bore witness to the rural exodus, Casa Neutra stands as an act of recovery and belonging. The earth, historically seen as a symbol of hardship, here becomes the living matter of architecture: structure, skin, and memory all at once.

Construction solution of Fetdeterra earth walls with continuous vertical joint, executed with large-format earth blocks Tapialblock®8/100/15 + Tapialblock®40/100/15 and Fetdeterra facing mortar for the upper and lower part of the windows.

A contemporary dialogue with tradition

Casa Neutra presents itself as a compact, almost hermetic volume facing outward, in clear reference to the traditional constructions of the region. Yet inside, it surprises with its openness and transparency, unfolding around six courtyards that act as thresholds between home and the landscape of the Esgueva Valley.

These courtyards not only organize the spaces, but also gradually immerse the inhabitant into the natural surroundings. Each one serves as a pause, a transition to the exterior, blurring the physical boundaries of the house until it becomes almost dematerialized in the face of the landscape.

Thus, the house becomes a refuge that observes the surroundings without being observed itself—a place where the seasons transform the relationship between architecture and nature, camouflaging or highlighting the building according to the colors of the year.

Materiality as a commitment to place

The choice of earth as a construction material is far from anecdotal; it forms the very essence of the project. Compressed earth blocks (CEB) shape both the skin and the structure of the house. Moreover, leftover materials are reused for pavements, curbs, and infills, closing a sustainable cycle in full respect for the environment.

The rendered sections of the façade are made with earth mortar, and the bathroom sinks are crafted from Campaspero stone, a native rock quarried just a few kilometers from the site. Every material choice reinforces the house’s intimate connection with its immediate surroundings.

A new interpretation of the courtyard

If the courtyard house has been one of architecture’s great recurring themes, Casa Neutra proposes a renewed and singular interpretation. Here, the courtyards are not just functional or climatic devices, but narrative elements that weave the story of the house: a succession of spatial experiences that invite contemplation, pause, and communion with the earth.

Ultimately, Casa Neutra stands as a brilliant example of how young architecture can establish a respectful and creative dialogue with the past and the landscape, proposing new ways of inhabiting spaces through memory and innovation.
