Tomás Montis Sastre

Born in Palma de Mallorca in 1985, Tomás Montis Sastre trained as an architect at the La Salle School of Architecture, part of the Universitat Ramon Llull, and earned his degree in 2010. His solid academic foundation was enriched by experience in leading architecture studios in both Barcelona and Belgium, thanks to professional placements that connected him with an international vision of the discipline.

Before founding his own practice, Tomás collaborated with several studios in Catalonia and Belgium, taking part in competitions and public architecture projects. His expertise was consolidated through the direction of works such as the geriatric residence in Pòrtol and Europe’s first academic building dedicated to scientific swimming pools—projects that earned him recognition in professional awards. Between 2017 and 2019, he was honoured with the Mallorca Architecture Award for the rehabilitation of the Can Suau flour mill in Llubí.

In 2015, after building a solid network of professional connections and refining his sensibility toward Mediterranean architecture, he founded Montis Sastre Arquitectura in Palma. Since then, the studio has balanced public and private commissions, standing out for its integration of competition, innovation, and a strong commitment to local culture.

Tomás Montis’ work is deeply rooted in Mediterranean culture, both in its vernacular and contemporary expressions. For him, traditional architecture is not a nostalgic reference but a fertile ground for concept and strategy. His approach gently weaves together public spaces—such as archaeological parks—with collective life and territorial memory, using native materials like marès stone, local wood, and traditional dry-stone masonry techniques.

His architectural language is defined by an attentiveness to human scale, where light and materials converse with the landscape and history. From the design of Casa OD in Alaró—a family home that harmonizes with the topography and surrounding nature—to the creation of inclusive and sensitive public spaces, his work is elevated by its ability to fuse innovation with tradition.

Tomás Montis Sastre develops an architecture that begins with public competitions and collective spaces, and unfolds into a poetics of place that enhances quality of life. His practice, nourished by international experience and Mediterranean roots, offers a coherent, culturally committed, and community-oriented architectural discourse.
