Jorge Pensi: the elegance of silence fades away

Master, your silence will keep speaking in every space touched by your light.

Jorge Pensi has passed away. With him, one of the most serene and lucid voices in contemporary design has gone silent. Argentine by birth, Barcelonian by choice, his life and work built a bridge between two worlds: the passion of Buenos Aires and the Mediterranean clarity of Barcelona..

His name will forever be linked to one of the most iconic pieces in Spanish design: the Toledo chair. In it, metal became light—almost ethereal; industrial precision turned into emotion. Pensi discovered in aluminum a new poetry of form, where every line, every void, was a breath.

But his legacy goes far beyond an object. His studio, his way of seeing and listening, his respect for materials and for those who shape them, defined an ethics of design rooted in discretion, honesty, and the search for essence. “Design is the organization of silence,” he once said—and in that phrase, his entire philosophy was contained.

Today, those of us who love design feel the luminous absence of his departure. Because Jorge Pensi taught us that what is truly beautiful does not need to shout; it simply exists—naturally and with meaning.

From Exágono, we remember him with gratitude and admiration. A few months ago, we celebrated his legacy by paying tribute to the Toledo chair, a symbol of balance and modernity. Today, we return to it as one returns to a masterpiece—to understand that time does not erase what is essential, it only makes it deeper.

Toledo chair.
