Charles Trevelyan

Charles Trevelyan, born in 1974 in Australia, originally trained in materials science and engineering. Over time, he gradually transitioned from the sciences to the arts, eventually finding a natural home for his work at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in 2007. Along the way, Charles developed a distinct style that draws on a broad range of influences—including the natural textures and color palettes of his Australian upbringing.

Rejecting traditional methods due to his unconventional creative path, Trevelyan is deeply committed to exploring materials and processes to develop furniture, lighting, and design objects inspired by the many ways people respond to the textures, colors, and structures of the natural world. With each creation, he seeks a balance between ambiguity and familiarity, weaving together form, color, and texture to spark curiosity in the viewer.

Favoring physical models and prototypes over sketches, Charles works through a continuous loop of material experimentation and fabrication—each aspect feeding into the other in an incremental process that deliberately avoids a fixed purpose or final function. In his studio, he produces test pieces, models, and maquettes using a wide range of materials and processes, blending the tactile, hands-on qualities of sculpting, casting, and texturing with the precision and detail of digital fabrication techniques.
