Born in 1970, Fernando Guerra is a Portuguese architectural photographer whose pioneering work has significantly influenced the way architecture is visualized and communicated. In 1993, he graduated in Architecture from the Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa and later moved to Macau, where he worked for five years as an architect. His dual background in architecture and photography has allowed him to develop a unique perspective that establishes a fluid connection between both disciplines. Guerra’s photography captures the essence of architectural spaces and offers a distinctive narrative that reflects his deep knowledge of design and structure.
In 1999, he founded the photography studio FG+SG, which has played a crucial role in promoting contemporary Portuguese architecture over the past quarter century, as well as contemporary architecture in general, with a special focus on the Brazilian landscape. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with a wide range of renowned architects such as Álvaro Siza, Fran Silvestre, OODA Architects, Space Workers, ARX Portugal, Mário Martins, Carlos Castanheira, Márcio Kogan, Isay Weinfeld, Arthur Casas, and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, and has received numerous international awards. Among them, the Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Award, the most prestigious in architectural photography. He won ArchDaily’s Project of the Year Award in 2015 and the first prize at the Architizer Architectural Photography Award in 2016.
In recognition of his contributions to architectural photography, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York acquired six of his works for its permanent collection in 2015. The Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon held an exhibition dedicated exclusively to his career in 2017.
His work has been widely published in several international architecture and design books and magazines such as Casabella, Wallpaper, Interior Design, GQ, Elle Decor, Vogue, Arquitectura & Diseño, as well as on leading online platforms including ArchDaily, Architecture Hunter and Dezeen.
His own online platform, ultimasreportagens.com, has become an essential resource for those interested in contemporary architecture, featuring more than 1,300 reports, along with articles and special publications. Social media is another way to follow his work regularly. Recently, he launched two projects on Instagram: Traveling with Siza, a compilation dedicated to his close relationship with Álvaro Siza, and FG Car Diary, where he explores his second great passion: the world of automobiles.
Fernando Guerra believes that architectural photography is not limited to capturing images of completed works, but rather a confluence of different genres and photographic forms. Through his photographs, buildings come to life, in an approach that seeks to offer a continuous sense of spatial experience. From this perspective, a work of architecture is never finished, as each experience lived within it represents a new beginning, a new story.
