The practice has been recognized for its ability to combine constructive precision with environmental sensitivity. In 2024 it received the RAIC Emerging Architectural Practice Award, an honor that highlights emerging studios that make a significant contribution to Canada’s architectural culture. Peter Braithwaite
Architect and founder Peter Braithwaite was born in Kingsville, Ontario. Before pursuing architecture, he trained in carpentry and woodworking, an experience that has decisively shaped his approach to design. His early academic interests included biology and the visual arts, but he soon turned his career toward architecture, convinced that building should be a conscious act of integrating concept and craft.
He graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, earning a degree in Environmental Design Studies and a Master of Architecture, and was awarded the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal for academic excellence. He later began doctoral studies at Dalhousie and the University of Calgary, focusing on the relationship between building systems, ecology, and biodiversity.
Alongside his professional practice, Braithwaite serves as an adjunct professor at Dalhousie’s School of Architecture, where he leads workshops and design studios. His teaching is complemented by mentoring young architects and engaging in academic research.
Peter Braithwaite’s career brings together research, teaching, and professional practice, united by a clear guiding principle: the pursuit of a responsible architecture, materially honest and deeply connected to place.
