Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos has been selected to carry out the extension and refurbishment of the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. This project includes the integration of two adjacent buildings into a single building, with a design that preserves the main access and optimises the functionality of the spaces.

Key interventions include a new atrium that unifies the architectural ensemble and provides a bright, open space, a central rehearsal room with adaptive solar control, and a cafeteria designed to encourage social interaction and exchange of experiences between students and teachers.

The Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, founded in Madrid by Paloma O’Shea in 1991, is named after its Honorary President, Queen Sofía. It is an initiative of the Albéniz Foundation that pursues the dual aim of helping youth and culture. This extension and refurbishment project represents a significant step in the evolution of the institution, ensuring that it remains a benchmark in musical education of excellence.

Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos

Since its foundation in 1974, the architectural firm Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos has developed projects in many fields of architecture, on very different scales: from single-family homes or schools to large infrastructures such as stadiums, railway stations or national museums.

Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos has its headquarters in Seville, where collaborators from different backgrounds and nationalities are currently working. Since 2002 Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos has had a permanent office in Amsterdam and since 2020 in Switzerland (Lugano). These offices are responsible for developing ongoing projects in Central Europe. It also has an associated studio in Madrid where it regularly carries out tenders and project management.

At present, the most significant projects in various stages of completion include the AC Lugano football stadium, sports hall and congress centre in Cornaredo, the refurbishment of the offices for Banco Santander in Santander, the remodelling and adaptation of the Convent of San Agustín in Seville into a hotel, the offices for the General State Administration in Madrid, the housing and mixed-use building on Wenckebachweg in Amsterdam and the new law faculty of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
