Malia Pérez is a ceramicist and researcher based in Oliete, a village in the province of Teruel where she was born and to which she returned. She is the heir to a family business founded by her grandfather seventy years ago, dedicated to the extraction of clays for the ceramic industry. This double belonging — to the scientific analysis of matter and to its artistic transformation — defines the centre of her practice. Malia Cerámica was born from that intersection: from the technical knowledge accumulated across three generations and from the desire to restore to those materials their sensory dimension, to make them speak of the territory to which they belong.
Her work begins with direct contact with the geological landscape of Teruel: walking, touching, smelling the clays and minerals at their place of origin. The Escucha and Utrillas Formations, deposited during the Cretaceous, are for her more than a context; they are the genealogy of the materials she collects, processes and fires. The iron present intrinsically in the clays, the limonite from the hills of Alcaine, the siderite that surfaces in coarse grain during firing, the sand sediment obtained by decantation: each element is selected with technical precision and treated as a creative agent. The palette of her pieces is drawn from the territory and transformed by fire.
Creation, in her practice, is the result of a sustained process of experimentation and reflection. Continuous testing, knowledge of the kiln, the study of the behaviour of each clay and each oxide: all of this precedes and makes form possible. Among her most recognised works are Molécula, awarded at the II Feria de Arte Saraqusta in Zaragoza, and Hallazgo, selected for the V Call for Artists in the same city, alongside the pieces Tierra Trenzada, Antique and Borra.
