Somos Nido designs a home that reflects the calm and authenticity of Barcelona’s Gràcia neighbourhood where it is located

All families dream of a home where they can live better, find a more human measure of time and reconnect with what truly matters. This project—a 107 m² full renovation by Somos Nido—has created one of those homes where everyday life flows effortlessly and each gesture seems to find its natural rhythm. Located on the quiet Carrer de la Costa, in Barcelona’s Gràcia neighbourhood, the apartment breathes in the authenticity of its streets, that village-like atmosphere that turns the area into a small community within the city.

From the very beginning, the studio’s intention was to bring that warm, unhurried atmosphere into the interior of the home. “Wood, light and the honesty of the design laid the foundations for a new way of living. Calm and authenticity can be felt throughout,” explain Somos Nido. And indeed, the home conveys that sincerity from the very first glance: a space designed to dwell, to share, and to live time without haste.

A structure for family life

The project is organised around a large wooden structure that embraces the living room, dining area and kitchen. It is a simple architectural gesture, yet one that articulates the space with luminous clarity. The result is a warm, functional and continuous environment, free from superfluous edges. At its centre, a green island acts as the domestic heart—a place where unhurried breakfasts, children’s games, mid-afternoon conversations and everyday family life naturally converge.

The renovation also preserves elements belonging to Barcelona’s architectural memory. The original volta catalana, carefully restored, adds height, rhythm and character, reminding us that a home is also the sum of the stories that came before it. Upon this foundation, Somos Nido constructs a refined material language in which wood, lime and ceramic establish a serene and natural palette. “These are materials that age well and gain character over time,” note the interior designers at Somos Nido, affirming the beauty of things that accompany the passing of time.

A home to be lived in

In this house, beauty is never ostentatious; it appears as a gentle presence, sometimes almost imperceptible, yet always decisive. Two details confirm this way of understanding design: fluted glass, which softly filters the light, and linen curtains with a red trim—a minimal gesture that introduces an unexpected nuance, like a pulse of colour enlivening the overall serenity of the space. “They are details that may go unnoticed at first glance but truly make the space more pleasant.” Such decisions define the studio’s philosophy: intervening only where necessary, with the conviction that wellbeing is born from what is essential, not from excess.

The family who lives in this home—young, practical and open—was looking for an honest house. And that honesty guides every centimetre of the project. “They are a practical, open and simple family. They never sought to impress, and their home reflects that. We designed it to be lived in,” explain Somos Nido. Here, design is placed at the service of everyday life: integrated shelving that visually frees the space, continuous flooring that supports movement, bespoke furniture that responds to real needs. A balance between practicality and beauty, order and spontaneity, without rigid hierarchies. A project conceived so that each day unfolds with naturalness and calm.

The home as a way of life

Ultimately, this project is a declaration of intent: a home where wood, light and serenity compose a contemporary refuge, tailored to a family that lives with transparency and joy. In a neighbourhood where neighbours still greet one another in passing, Somos Nido has created a home that captures that same everyday humanity and transforms it into architecture. The story of Tessa Muga, founder and creative director of Somos Nido, is one of those journeys in which the home—its warmth, its intimate pulse—becomes both compass and destination.

An entrepreneur by nature, Tessa began her path in 2013 by co-founding The Home Hunter, a different kind of real estate agency, conceived for those seeking homes with soul. It was not simply about offering properties, but about recognising in each one a potential life, a story yet to unfold. Through her gaze, The Home Hunter grew into a close, welcoming and deeply human space, where design became an everyday and accessible language.

Over time, that sensitivity towards dwelling—that desire to transform spaces into meaningful places—took shape in a new project. In 2019, Tessa and her team brought Somos Nido to life, an interior design studio that understands the creation of a home as an act of care. The studio’s philosophy is rooted in a simple yet powerful conviction: the spaces we live in should embrace us, accompany us, and allow us to be. From this perspective, Somos Nido designs interiors that breathe serenity, harmony and authenticity, with meticulous attention to materials, light and the emotional scale of every detail.

The name of the studio is no coincidence: a nest is a symbol of rootedness, belonging and shared intimacy. In each project, the team led by Tessa works to give form to this concept through textures, colours and atmospheres capable of connecting with what is most essential in the people who will inhabit them.
