A few years ago, presenting a project by Patricia Bustos, we named her empress of the curve, a throne that she will have to share from now on, and in view of this collection, with the Indian architect and designer Jwalant Mahadevwala, founder of the Andblack studio, whose extraordinary architectural project we have already published in this magazine.
Andblack design studio now presents the Loop series, a collection of avant-garde furniture characterised by sculptural forms and an innovative approach to design with organic shapes. Each piece is a testament to the studio’s philosophy of fusing art with functionality, pushing the boundaries of experimentation with materials and design philosophy.
Inspired by the idea of a single surface made of a single material, the Loop series uses double-curved surfaces to achieve structural stability, organic aesthetics and ergonomic functionality. The design approach emphasises the creation of dynamic yet balanced forms, where visual design and functional appearance are inspired by a single idea. The series challenges traditional ideas of furniture making by replacing multi-element compositions with seamless surfaces that interlock into independent forms.

Innovative craftsmanship and technology
The Loop series achieves its complexity through digital tools combined with traditional woodworking techniques. This dual approach combines digital precision with handcrafted aesthetics, resulting in designs that are global in their aesthetic, yet rooted in their origins. Repetitive prototyping ensures that each piece meets rigorous performance criteria, while the use of natural materials aligns with the studio’s commitment to sustainable design principles.
The series has received international recognition, including the Idea Tops 2023 award for best global design. After being showcased at leading design events in India, the LOOP series will make its international debut at Milan Design Week 2025.
Highlights of the Loop Collection
Loop bench and seat. The Loop bench and seat explore fluid forms through continuous curves and thoughtful geometry. The bench features almost tangent undulations that create visual tension and versatile seating. The seat achieves a cantilevered design with strategic variations in thickness, balancing minimalism, structural stability and ergonomic comfort.

Loop lounger and rocking chair. The LOOP lounger and rocking chair redefine seating through continuous, fluid forms. The lounger uses a single continuous surface for a seamless lounging experience, integrating form and function. The rocking chair extends a radial curve from its base, creating a dynamic cantilevered seat and backrest that emphasises movement and structural balance.

Loop Swings. Inspired by the simplest swings made from car and truck tyres in India, Loop swings are an exploration of infinite circular geometries. The twisted swing explores the Möbius-inspired twist, allowing for a continuous flow, while the spiral swing adds another loop for back support. The designs combine complexity with simplicity, offering a unique interpretation of movement.

Loop Studio Series. The Loop studio series explores the juxtaposition of linear and curvilinear forms together with contrasting material forms. The study table and chair feature continuous wooden surfaces supported by loose, sleek metal structures. The bookcase defies conventional storage by integrating looped surfaces into its lattice structure, combining functionality with sculptural artistry.

Loop Bar and Console. Both pieces explore the idea of carving a sculptural form from a solid mass. The bar is a cantilevered looping hollow that balances weight with elegance. The shell-shaped console goes further by carefully picking up the material at several points, lifting the structure off the ground and creating an ethereal presence.

Loop suspension lamps. The suspension lamp series explores fluid geometries and dynamic lighting. The Masque suspension lamp features sinuous surfaces that emit light through gaps in the edges, while the Ripple suspension lamp mimics the surface disturbances of water, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow. These designs combine sculptural elegance with moving visual experiences.

Andblack Studio
Jwalant Mahadevwala runs Andblack Design Studio in India with Kanika Agarwal. After gaining professional experience at Mozaic Design in Goa and Mistry Architects in Bangalore, Jwalant completed an MA in Architecture and Urbanism at the AA (Architectural Association) in London at the Design Research Lab. Jwalant furthered his professional experience at Zaha Hadid Architects in London over the next 4 years, working on several prestigious projects, including the Petroleum Research Institute in Saudi Arabia, from concept/concept phase to construction, as well as a unique opportunity to exclusively direct and design a sculpture for a private art collector in Chicago.
Since setting up the Andblack design studio in 2011, he has been responsible for projects such as the Kevdi eco-tourism camp in Surat district, the paper tube pavilion in Delhi, the wooden canopy in Pune and several residences in Surat and Ahmedabad. In addition to his professional work, Jwalant runs a design studio on “Generative Processes in Design” with Masters students at the School of Interior Design, CEPT University, Ahmedabad.
His main passion lies in the pursuit of the design process. He enjoys experimenting, prototyping and developing systems that can form good design solutions. His rigour for the design of space versus the design of place is what sets him apart from others. For him, unbridled creativity and an energetic approach to each project are a must. In addition to architecture, artistic photography and travelling the world is what keeps him active.
