d’Aussy Interiors designs a Mediterranean-style home in l’Empordà using natural materials

This house is located in a privileged place in the inland Empordà, where fields and forests coexist in a well-defined way, creating a landscape that invites you to disconnect. Close enough to the most beautiful beaches and coves of the Baix Empordà, and far enough away so as not to be overwhelmed by the dense summer tourism typical of the coastal towns. The intervention of the studio d’Aussy Interiors in this house designed by the architect Damián Ribas consisted of interior design and decoration work.

“The functional scheme of the project is currently the usual one, a family of four, but which welcomes grandparents, guests, cousins and friends. A summer house, but one that can be teleworked. Spaces that allow you to easily organise the hustle and bustle of a lived-in house, warmth to feel in what in Catalan we call “una llar”, a home, not a hotel or a new house.

The architect Damián Ribas has masterfully achieved the integration of the house in the environment, leaving the good of a modern and practical house, and the beauty of the materials inherited from our mother nature. Our interior design reproduces this with the same materials applied to furniture, lights and objects. Natural fabrics, clay, wood, paper… all dancing in the same space, creating harmony“

“In our studio we attach great importance to the night and its light, we like to see from the outside that a space invites you to enter, as if you felt protected. And that it doesn’t let you leave, because of how good it feels. We translate it into specific lights in each corner: now I read, now I cook and now we all have dinner. And as if it were a film, and I were the observer from the outside, I like to imagine all those corners and spaces that turn on and off, and in which their inhabitants carry out the different activities.”

Clara Joly d’Aussy

From l’Empordà, a privileged environment in Catalonia, the studio d’Aussy Interiors, created in 2018, cooks projects over a slow fire, led by the interior designer Clara Joly d’Aussy and her collaborators. Its 100% Mediterranean and ecological philosophy focuses on respect for the environment, local materials and local produce.

Clara, born in Barcelona, studied Interior Design at Elisava, successfully obtaining a Higher Degree in Design, specialising in Interiors. With 15 years of experience, she has collaborated with prestigious architecture and interior design studios in Australia, such as Alexander and Co and with the Japanese Koichi Takada, carrying out residential and hospitality projects.

Together with local architects, craftsmen, landscapers and industrialists, Clara designs homes for her clients, whether it be complete renovations of family heirloom homes, acquisitions in prime locations in need of a new lease of life or interior design and landscaping of new build homes.

“My respect for nature and the environment comes from my apprenticeship in Australia, where nature is a religion of its own, not to be touched, but admired. I learned to work in a team…with the support and opinion of experts.

My love for interior architecture and landscaping, and the relationship of the two in symbiosis, comes from my father, who taught me from an early age how objects worked, the why of things, and the love of plants. My mother, on the other hand, taught me the importance of balance in creating an environment. Light, textures and a few well-placed elements. Both have been very influential in my development as an interior designer.

My summer house (my parents’), an old barn in the Empordà, is the temple where much of my inspiration is born, created by my parents, where I have spent the best moments of my life, and now I look back and recreate many of the details and corners in my projects, almost unconsciously“.
