This project reflects Febrero Studio’s passion for creating unique, personalised spaces where original architecture and contemporary design coexist in harmony—a celebration of the past and a gentle welcome to the future.

The owners of this Madrid home, a young couple with two young children, asked the architects of Febrero Studio to reform and renovate their Madrid home in order to relocate from New York where they had lived for several years.

The architects proposed an original and simple design, eliminating the excessive compartmentalisation of previous renovations, in order to recover the original character of the house.

It was a pleasure to work on this project because our clients agreed with our vision. We sought to respect the original character of the house, eliminating the baroque elements that clashed with the essence of the property and opted for a clean and neutral intervention with a contemporary touch“, says Mercedes González Ballesteros, co-founder of Febrero Studio. “Our aim was to create a visual and aesthetic continuity from the common areas of the house to the interior, maintaining the minimum contrast and guaranteeing a clean and harmonious design” she adds.

The ground floor, of about 400m2, distributed over two levels, has an entrance hall with a striking white staircase, a living room open to the dining room and kitchen, as well as three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Three terraces bring in sunlight and provide a connection between indoors and outdoors: a large terrace connected to the living room and two smaller terraces near the master bedroom and the entrance.

On the upper floor the architects have developed a tranquil space with a tonal aesthetic of neutral colours and clean lines. This multifunctional space, distributed around a unit that combines a bookshelf and a second kitchen, includes a living area with a fireplace, a built-in sofa, a games area with vintage table football, a dining room, a study corner and a small gym.

Fitting a rational layout into a space with technical limitations related to plumbing and structural elements was a challenge overcome by the design team, who opted for the integration of an original staircase and a renovated layout throughout the house.

One of the most special aspects of this project is undoubtedly the top floor. This multifunctional space has become one of our favourites, both for us and for the owners” says Ballesteros.

Some key elements of the furniture come from Febrero Studio’s own collection, such as the coffee table on the ground floor, the office table and the two dining tables.

We also incorporated lamps by Chinese artist Mario Tsai, which we distribute in Spain. The dining chairs on the ground floor are vintage, while those upstairs are designed by Vincent Van Duysen for Zara Home” explains Ballesteros.
