Morris & Co, or Morris Marshall Faulkner & Co., as the company was first known in 1861, has always been home to some of the brightest creative talents of the era.Paying homage to a creative stream spanning more than 160 years, the Morris & Friends collection features wallpaper and fabric designs drawn from the archives of icons such as J.H. Dearle (1859-1932) and Edward Godwin (1833-1886), now presented by Gancedo.
The Morris & Friends collection celebrates the under-recognised work of 19th century women artists such as Kate Faulkner (1841-1898) May Morris (1862-1938) and Kathleen Kersey, active in the early 20th century.
Some models
Fruit
William Morris
An abundance of ripe pomegranates hang tantalisingly from the branches of an overgrown tree, making their way through the flora.
Stamped over thin branches in the background to give the design greater depth, Fruit is one of William Morris’s earliest designs produced in 1864, demonstrating early on its creator’s skill as a pattern-maker.
Bramble
kate faulkner
Two new colour combinations with warm botanical undertones transform Kate Faulkner’s 1879 design into an ideal fabric solution for contemporary upholstery. Faulkner, a talented designer in her own right, was the sister of Charlie Faulkner, one of the founding members of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co (later known simply as “Morris & Co.”) in 1861.
Honeysuckle & Tulip
may Morris
First produced in 1876, it was one of May Morris’s earliest designs depicting botanical and floral motifs intertwined in a mirrored repeating pattern. The effect is that of a trellis surrounding large multi-petalled stylised honeysuckle tulips. This beautiful symmetrical design is available in various colours.
Bamboo
Edward Goldwin
Newly reinvented from the original wallpaper fabric, Bamboo is an adaptation of a design by E.W. Godwin in 1872. Godwin in 1872. Like Morris, Godwin was a home beautifier. Oscar Wilde referred to him as “one of the most artistic spirits of this century in England”. Godwin was also greatly influenced by Japanese design and often used bamboo motifs in his works.
Leicester
John Henry Dearle
Inspired by an earlier design (Bachelors Button, 1892), this evocative pattern embodies the romanticism of the medieval past that so inspired Morris and was designed by John Henry Dearle in 1912.
Gracefully arching leaves punctuated by medium-sized flowers.
Meadow Sweet
J.H. Dearle
Whimsical and full of nostalgic charm, the symmetrical plant motifs are arranged in a formal design on this wallpaper, typical of the Arts & Crafts style. Originally designed by J.H. Dearle in 1904, this wallpaper is wonderfully suited to its light and airy colours, but really stands out with the colours Blush and Mineral Blue.
