The beauty of the essential: Angel Martin restores a rural home in Mallorca where design merges with the landscape

In the heart of Mallorca, nestled among stone walls and open horizons,Angel Martin has completed one of those projects that doesn’t need to raise its voice to be remembered. This rural house, restored by Angel Martin Studio, embodies a serene and profound idea of architecture.

Founded on the island where he grew up, Angel Martin Studio has gradually forged a quiet approach, rooted in noble materials, everyday life and the natural beauty of the surroundings. “I consider myself a lover of austere design that highlights what is essential. In our studio, we always seek the simplicity of form and the nobility of natural materials to shape calm, warm and pure environments,” says the architect, who also serves as the studio’s creative director.

His work—an intersection of architecture, interior design and furniture making—draws inspiration from what never goes out of style: the passing of time, raw materials, the light that enters through the window in the early hours of the day. This countryside home is a fine example.

The intervention begins with a deep respect for the pre-existing rural architecture. Rather than imposing an external aesthetic, Martín chooses to work from within: to recover, clean, and simplify. Natural stone, oak wood, marble and lime mortar become his allies in rewriting the house without betraying it. Every decision—from the windows to the exposed beam ceilings—answers a clear intention: to make the interior converse with the landscape, to let the present honour the past without nostalgia.

“For me, a good project is one that conveys calm. A space where you can be silent and feel that everything makes sense,” says Martín. This desire to create spaces that soothe and embrace is reflected in the colour palette, in the fluid transitions between rooms, in the way the light gently filters through linen curtains.

Design in the details, materiality as language

In the dining room, a curved oak bench custom-designed by the studio anchors the space with sculptural intent. It is paired with a round table clad in mortex and a light fixture from Santa & Cole—elements that, far from seeking attention, reinforce the overall harmony. The living room is a warm retreat where pieces also designed by the studio coexist: a curved oak console, an organically shaped wooden coffee table, a large modular linen sofa.

The kitchen, open and functional, is organised around a marble island crafted by a local artisan. As in the rest of the house, wall-mounted cabinets have been avoided to allow light to flow and materials to breathe.

Architecture for life, designing with the inhabitants in mind

This renovation is not the result of a formal gesture, but a way of living. The house was conceived for a family, and every corner is designed to foster connection, rest, and natural light. “Architecture must serve people. It’s not just about creating beautiful spaces, but about improving the quality of life for those who live in them. That means listening, observing and working with great humility,” Martín explains.

This attitude is also reflected in how he collaborates with local artisans, in the design of bespoke furniture, and in the selection of elements that age with dignity. His is not an architecture of impact, but of permanence.

An ethic of simplicity

In times of aesthetic saturation and visual noise, Ángel Martín’s work aligns with a school of thought that defends the essential. This house in Mallorca does not aim to be an icon, but rather a place to live well. And therein lies its strength.

“Each project is a chance to strip things back, to keep only what makes sense. When you achieve that, the space breathes. And so do you,” the architect concludes.
