Wood Estudio transforms a home in Vitoria-Gasteiz into a warm and functional space full of original solutions

Wood Estudio ‘s intervention has focused on the ground floor of this house, where a 100m2 space that needed to be renovated has been transformed, achieving more welcoming atmospheres with more storage.

As we walk through the house we immediately notice the presence of an expert cabinetmaker. José, one of Wood’s founding partners, trained as a cabinetmaker and creates very interesting wooden solutions.

In the entrance hall/distributor we find several solutions of this type. In front of the entrance door, a wooden paneling integrates the bathroom door to make it less visible, creating a relevant element.

On the left, another white lacquered panelling with panelled panels integrates a wardrobe ideal for hanging up coats when arriving home, and a dressing room in the dining area. And, as the third element of this space, a custom-made three-sided piece of furniture offers functionality to both the living room and the entrance hall.

Transforming the living room with wood solutions

On entering the living room we are surprised by the solution created to conserve the fireplace, one of the requests of the owners of the house. The interior designers have clad it in wood and added a porcelain material mouthpiece, making it the central element of the living room, the focus of all eyes. To the left of it, a panelling with a recess for the television and a base unit illuminated from the panelling completes this space.

The relaxation area needed to be enlarged, so the access to the kitchen was closed off, maintaining the visual connection that provides spaciousness, by means of a fixed glazed element. Thanks to this solution it was possible to enlarge the space where to place a large corner sofa in front of the television with space for the whole family, achieving a very cosy atmosphere.

Next to the fireplace, Wood’s interior designers designed a very useful and decorative shelf with a small hidden desk, perfect for those moments when you need to work at home. This custom-made solution also includes a folding lid to store your laptop, diary and all your office material out of sight, but always at hand.

The TV unit, fireplace and bookcase together form a cleverly integrated design front that includes plenty of storage space, even for the wood for the fireplace.

At the other end of the living room there was a structural element from a previous renovation that included an unergonomic bench, the interior designers completely redesigned it with a new wooden solution. They clad the wall with panelling, which allowed them to adjust the depth of the bench, frame the window and integrate it with the rest of the bespoke furniture. They also updated the cladding of the lower area with more decorative materials, adding drawers that provided extra storage. All this has provided a multi-purpose area: dining room, work and meeting area.

The kitchen, a meeting place for the whole family

It includes a central island that becomes the heart of the home, where the whole family gathers and shares day-to-day life. Previously, the kitchen had access to the dining room through a narrow corridor, the interior designers decided to close this passage and in its place a pantry and a breakfast unit were created, optimising an area that had been wasted. The lighting plays an important role, with different scenes that invite you to enjoy the space for cooking and relaxing after-dinner meals.

A separate dining room, future bedroom

The dining room was designed with the intention of converting it into a separate bedroom in the future, which is why the interior designers integrated the dressing room into the panelling. At present, the panelling is a decorative element that hides the dressing room; when the space is used as a bedroom, the wardrobes will be integrated and accessible.

To make the space independent, a ceiling-guided sliding door has been designed, which is usually positioned on the wall of the dining room, allowing for an open and spacious entrance area.

The transformation of the bathroom

In the bathroom, the access door has been moved to add an extra cupboard, providing much more storage. The cupboard doors were made of the same material as the front of the washbasin, thus integrating the cupboard in a discreet way. For the lacquering of these elements, one of the predominant tones in the flooring was chosen, designed with a combination of earth and blue tones. The walls were clad with lime mortar in a neutral tone, which helps to create a greater sense of spaciousness. In the shower area, another detail, a niche was incorporated to house the soaps.

José and Estíbaliz are interior designers and founders of Wood Estudio. José trained as a cabinetmaker and this dedication to detail and quality craftsmanship has left an indelible mark on his way of doing things. With years of experience and training, they decided to set up their own interior design studio in Vitoria Gasteiz.

José, a perfectionist and lover of detail, seeks to find a balance between functionality and aesthetics, with rational spaces, in keeping with the place where they are located and the way in which they are lived. He is methodical and conscientious. He likes to supervise the manufacturing process of each piece, taking exquisite care in every detail.

Not content with simply renovating homes, they are passionate about transforming places, turning them into authentic reflections of the people who live there. With roots in carpentry and joinery, they have craftsmanship and precision in their DNA. They consider bespoke joinery solutions a crucial element in the design of a home.
